How to Make a Suspension Tripod

Here are a few pictures and some hints on making a bamboo tripod for use as a suspension / partial suspension frame.

This one was rigged for my birthday party in May, 2008.

Features

Parts list

(3) vertical poles

(3) horizontal floor bracing poles

(1) piece of line to lash the poles together

(3) pieces of leather thong for anti-slip stops on the verticals

(6) pieces of twine to hold the horizontal bracing poles

(1) Ring or carabiner

In Seattle we have a great resource for buying bamboo - Bamboo Hardwoods

 Construction notes

Wrap a leather thong around the top of each vertical pole.  Tie with a square knot - or use a Turk's head if you're feeling fancy.  These pieces of leather keep the hemp tripod lashing from sliding down the pole.

Lash the three vertical poles together, using a tripod lashing.  Refer to a knot or pioneering book or use Google to find instructions.

Stand the tripod up.

Lash a horizontal pole to two of the legs, using a square lashing.  I used 4mm hemp in this picture.

Lash the other two horizontal poles to the legs, using square lashings.

Tie a ring or carabiner to the top of the pole.  I used a 30 foot piece of 8mm hemp for the tripod lashing and had enough left over for the ring.

 Test and enjoy!
